The VIIth International Snow Race Festival 'OpenKarelia-2011' took place on 28, 29 and 30 January in Karelia along the Finnish border, about 300 km north of St Petersburg.
The main objective of this unparallelled Festival, sponsored by Motul Russia, is live communication among amateurs of snowmobile sport and active recreation. In 2011 it gathered about 100 participants from different regions of Russia, Norway, Finland and Sweden.
The main difference of the Festival is that snowmobile sport amateurs with various skill levels may participate in the event, from beginners to professional riders. Participants are divided into 3 classes: 'Fan' (amateurs with no or little experience); 'Sport' (amateurs with experience); and 'ProSport' (professional riders). The general direction of the Festival is enduro. The riders competed over three days in two 40-kilometre cross country races and a one-day 200-250 kilometre team race.
