Last weekend, Road Atlanta hosted the Motul Petit Le Mans, a 10-hour endurance race that saw Daytona Prototypes, LMP and GT cars battle side-by-side at the legendary track. Finishing fourth in the LMP2 class in his Motul-powered Oreca, we caught up with Fabio Scherer from High Class Racing to find out how his race went and how Motul helps him get across the finish line.
Fabio, Road Atlanta is famed for its elevation changes and curves. What's it like to race at?
It’s a bit like a really intense rollercoaster ride. You’re moving up and down, and side to side a lot. But I really like to race there, it’s a lot of fun.
The race is 10 hours and 1,000 miles long. How important is it to find the balance between performance and reliability to finish a race of this size?
It’s really important to strike that balance in endurance racing. As well as that, you want the car to feel consistent and not too difficult to drive. That’s vital for the driver in such a long, tiring race. So, it’s really crucial to find that balance, whether that’s fuel usage or reliability.
In endurance racing there’s obviously a strategy that defines how you tackle the various stages of the race. What's your favourite bit of Motul Petit Le Mans, the beginning, the middle or the end?
I much prefer the stint towards the end. Because then you know if you are in for the win or not and can fight hard for it in the closing laps. Before then it’s about trying to be on the pace but at the same time conservative so as not to have any problems.
How important are Motul's products in helping you get across the finish line, ideally in a podium position?
Motul’s products are vital in helping us get to the end of the race. If we lose engine power or, in the worst case, the engine completely stops working, we have to retire. So having good quality products that we know have been proven in motorsport make all the difference.
Why do you choose Motul 300V as your lubricant for endurance racing? What is it specifically about this oil that makes it so particularly suited to this style of racing?
Motul 300V has a long history in racing and has generated a lot of success for the teams who’ve used it. But it’s more than just the products, which are really good quality. The Motul people are really friendly to work with and we have a great match for success.
