WRTEKNICA: “THERE'S NO POINT OF CARS BEING FAST IF DRIVERS CANNOT EXTRACT IT”

04.02.2021

Racing driver, entrepreneur, stunt driver. Will Wattanawongkiri’s talents know no bounds. Keen to put his racing knowledge to good use, a year ago he founded WRTeknica. But this is a performance shop with a difference. A place where the focus is on combining data and experience to make some of the fastest, sharpest, best-handling track cars in the USA.

WRTEKNICA: “THERE'S NO POINT OF CARS BEING FAST IF DRIVERS CANNOT EXTRACT IT”

Will, what is WR Teknica?

Basically, we are a shop. The primary goal is to help other drivers with vehicle dynamics. What I mean by vehicle dynamics is anything that is relevant to making a car handle better. We're focusing on suspension, brakes, wheels and tyres and a little bit of aerodynamics. Some of our personal shop cars or our customers’ cars are the fastest cars out on the racetracks nationally. So, the cars that come through our door have set track records. You know our personal track cars like the Porsche 911 GT3 is the fastest in the country. We focus on making the cars handle really well, but we also develop drivers. There's no point cars being fast if drivers cannot extract it.

What’s your secret to making cars go faster?

We’re very data driven. I personally have about 16 years of experience in the racing industry. I've driven it all: front drive, rear drive, all-wheel drive, front engine, rear engine, mid engine. I've also won a lot of races and held a few track records. So, I guess it’s a combination of data, experience and knowledge gathered over the years. We look at the data and tailor the car to the driver, whereas a lot of other shops will tell you that this is the setup that you have to go with.

You’ve raced a lot yourself. Which side of the business do you prefer: driving or mechanics?

I'm more of a driver. I have to work on a car, so that I have a good understanding of what auto mechanicals do. And so, I have a better understanding of the physics. Having a better understanding of the mechanical side helps me tune these cars and adjust them to the maximum potential. So, to answer that question, I'm probably not much of a mechanic. I'm more of an engineer, but I do have to work on cars every now. I have a great team. These are some of the top guys in the industry.

Motul is a new partner for you. What difference do you think this will make?

Yes, Motul is a new partnership for us. I've worked with Motul in various ways in the past. My idea is to start doing a lot of co-branding with Motul. So maybe we’ll put Motul’s branding on our apparel, our trailer, our toolbox and our race cars. We’ll also distribute Motul products from our shop. Motul is the best lubrication product in the industry. I personally use it, and I only use the best stuff. So, I trust the product and I’m proud to represent Motul.  We have the right ingredients, the right equipment, the right team and the right image and we have a lot of reach within our network. So, hopefully, a lot of people will start buying from us.

How has the pandemic affected your work?

It's not been so bad for us. We are still doing a lot of motorsports stuff. We haven’t been too badly affected because the racetracks are still open. We're literally at the racetrack almost every weekend.
