At the Intermot fair last weekend in Germany, Motul launched its new concept: the ‘Motul School’ for motorcyclists. The Motul School concept is the latest embodiment of ‘Specialist’ – one of Motul’s Brand values.
Together with its full new Brand identity, symbolised by a chemistry bottle, the concept was designed and developed by five of Motul’s best technical specialists. One of them is Dave Wolman, Director of the Centre of Excellence Powersport Americas at Motul, who in a former life was the technical director of the “Yoshimura racing team” working for the world-famous Kevin Schwantz.
What started out 30 years ago as a very complex and technical six-hour chemistry training course for engineers and mechanics, has recently been adapted into a 12-minute information session, accessible for all non-professionals.
The goal of this technical training session is to demonstrate the benefits and effects of Motul oil on the engine parts in a visible manner, in a way that all bike owners can understand.
Mission invisible: ESTER Core® oil
Oil is the least visible factor in any engine. Dave Wolman and the international team demonstrate the effects of fully synthetic oil using glass tubes containing pistons and small metal and plastic balls, clearly showing the effects of lubrication to every visitor.
One of the characteristics of ESTER Core® is ‘polarity’, which makes the oil stick to the metal parts of your engine, providing better protection against friction or during extended periods of inactivity such as winter storage. In the glass tubes, you can clearly see the metal balls sticking to the piston, this generates the same effect that Motul ESTER Core® oil provides to your engine’s mechanical parts.
Fuel System Clean additive
Another effect that is demonstrated is the presence of water in the fuel. Using small pipettes, the Motul School demonstrates the effect of the Motul additive Fuel System Clean on fuel. With the water, the additive turns the colour of the fuel a bit ‘milky’. In the pipette without the additive, the fuel retains its original colour. The phenomenon of water in fuel often occurs in climates where large temperature differences occur. What Motul’s additive does is to ‘waterproof’ the fuel, leaving a film on the inside of fuel tanks to protect them against corrosion.
Car versus motorcycle engine oil (PCMO versus MCO)
Next, we look at the difference between passenger car motor oil (PCMO) and motorcycle oil (MCO). In a passenger car, three different oils are used for the engine, the gearbox, and the differential. In a motorcycle, the oil needs to lubricate the connecting rod piston group, clutch, and gearbox in just one engine compartment. As a result, MCO needs a whole different set of characteristics to fulfil all the motorcycle’s lubrication needs.
Braking and cleaning
The session also looks at the effects of Motul’s brake fluids (continuous optimal braking) and cleaning products.
Motul bottles always have a dedicated JASO and API standard shown on the back label of the bottle, showing international certification to industry standards.
