MOTUL Snowpower Synth 2T – Made to be the best !

20.04.2021

What our MOTUL ambassadors say

Motul Snowpower Synth was made with one purpose. It was going to be the best 2-stroke oil on the market for modern snowmobiles. Below is the story how we created the jewel among 2-stroke oils for modern snowmobiles.

The Story of Snowmobile Synth !

When the development process started some key performance indicators was identified. First the oil should have no temperature restrictions. It needed to perform whatever the weather and the outside temperature. It meant also we need to use the best available base oils and additives. We also need to have an oil that mixes effectively into petrol, even if the temperature is well below -40°. Furthermore, we need to guarantee that the injection pump is pumping the same amount of oil even if the temperature is getting extremely cool. To carry out test we bought an oil injection pump of the same type that is installed in a Ski-Doo E-TEC engine.

The Story of Snowmobile Synth !

With this pump we carried out test in a very controlled laboratory environment. For this purpose, a cryostat was used – in which we have exact control when we simulate different arctic temperatures. In the cryostat we carried out test of pumpability of different competitor oils and compared the results with our own test versions. Based on this test we know Motul Snowpower Synth 2T is more temperature stable than other tested oils and deliver the correct amount of oil to the engine, even under extremely low temperatures.

The next key performance indicator we looked at was cleanliness. We know that a clean engine gives the user more engine hours and more trouble-free riding. We identified the pistons, piston rings and the exhaust valves as areas where cleanliness is extra essential.

The new Rotax engines have variable valves R.A.V.E. (Rotax Adjustable Variable Exhaust). Poor lubrication of these valves will after some time make them stick with engine failure as consequence.

A twenty-hour field test with Ski-Doo E-TEC 850 was conducted, first with the original oil and thereafter with the formulation that became Motul Snowpower Synth 2T. It was evident that less deposits on the R.A.V.E. valves appeared when using Snowpower Synth 2T from Motul. The original oil showed more carbon deposits!

The same twenty-hour field test gave answer on potential wear on the pistons, piston rings and piston pins.  The conclusion was that both oils were protecting the cylinder heads, pistons, piston rings and piston heads from wear and forming deposits. The only difference was the localization of the deposits under the piston head.

Conclusion

From the development process we know that Motul Snowpower 2T Synth is having better pumbability in low temperatures compared to the officially recommended oil.

Motul Snowpower 2T Synth build to a lesser degree carbon deposits on the Rotax Adjustable Variable Exhaust compared to the original oil. Motul Snowpower 2T Synth is not showing any higher extent of wear or deposits on the pistons, piston rings or piston pins compared to the original oil.

Hence the overall conclusion is that the Motul 2T Snowpower have an overall superior performance compared to the orginal oil. Motul recommends the use of Snowpower Synth 2T for all modern 2-stroke snowmobiles.
