Subaru becomes the first car maker to use MotulEvo

20.05.2021

Subaru is one of the first car manufacturers to join the MotulEvo project, a package of unique products and services for the maintenance of automatic transmissions. The project also aims to help spare parts dealers and workshops improve their professional skills, especially important because of the continuous evolution of engines that requires constant updates. To understand the benefits of the partnership, we talked with technical manager of Subaru Italy’s after sales department Alessio Trainotti.

Subaru is the first automotive company to join the project. What benefits have you found at a technical level?

The ATM V-Force machinery of the MotulEvo project is simple to use and modular. It allows us to perform automatic transmission maintenance control and management operations in the workshop or even remotely via wi-fi or Bluetooth. It can be connected quickly, not only to CVT systems but also to previous four-and-five-speed automatic transmissions. In addition, it is equipped with a descriptive and really helpful user manual. It’s been really useful for our new Lineartronic hybrid gearbox.

What are some of the technological highlights coming from Subaru?

As far as technological innovation is concerned, our strengths are traditionally the Boxer engine (with opposed cylinders), Symmetrical AWD, the recent Lineartronic gearbox and the innovative EyeSight driving assistance system, which contains a series of functions designed to warn and help the driver. The Lineatronic CVT is the world's first continuously variable automatic transmission with chain drive, developed for use on all-wheel-drive passenger cars. The system allows the engine to be kept at an optimal speed, ensuring efficient combustion with very low fuel consumption. It is also equipped with a torque converter with locking function, which improves the damping of engine torque fluctuations and extends the locking range at a lower speed than that of the conventional automatic transmission. It is able to ensure uniform acceleration and can also operate in manual mode with, six, seven or eight gears, depending on the version, using paddles on the steering wheel that allow quick changes and immediate responses.

From your point of view, what benefits can the driver get from maintenance of the automatic transmission?

Without a doubt, fuel economy, longer life, restoration of values and driving comfort. The automatic transmission consists of several mechanical, hydraulic and electronic parts that must work together correctly in the times set by the electronic control. The mechanical parts and the friction parts, even if built with wear-resistant materials and able to withstand heavy work cycles, can release, over time, small particles of material, which risk circulating together with the oil of the transmission. Therefore, for proper operation over the life of the car, it is advisable to carry out an internal "washing" of the gearbox.

What are the Motul products you use and recommend to your customers?

Our work with Motul has always been a winning collaboration. 5W-30 and 0W-20 motor oils are the products that Motul has developed in a specific way for our cars and the ones we use and recommend the most. These two lubricants are able to satisfy the technical demands imposed by our brand in terms of quality, reliability and performance for all our gasoline and e-Boxer engines.

How do you see the future of aftersales in Italy and what are your future projects?

I believe that customer service should remain at the centre. For this reason, we want our network of workshops to be able to offer our customers a complete service, ranging from mechanical repair to electronics, bodywork repair to tyres, as well as support with chemicals and lubricants.

Always being updated on products and technologies is essential, especially in an evolving sector like automotive. Do you organise training courses with Motul?

Subaru Italia has always organised technical courses on a regular basis, making training courses available to the entire affiliate network and working closely with our strong commercial partners such as Motul. Even during the pandemic, when we couldn’t have face-to-face courses, we introduced streaming training and e-learning teaching.
