29.10.2020

Cédric Goudant is a former kart racer turned engine builder and pro tuner. A decade ago he set up Cédric Sport to make and tune karting engines for the world’s top teams. Along the way he’s picked up a string of awards for his stunning kart engines, including a recent world championship win. Naturally, he uses Motul lubricants.

THE WORLD’S BEST KART ENGINE MAKER!

How did Cédric Sport come about?

I started karting in 1992, when I was 15 years old. But I’ve always been fascinated by the technical side of this sport. Having had a bit of success in engine tuning, I decided in 2009 to create my own company, Cédric Sport. At that time, I worked with Tony Kart racing and the official French distributor. I was surprised to discover a lot of success with my preparation of Vortex engines for the KZ category. In 2015 my engines won the KZ2 World Cup at Le Mans with the fantastic driver Thomas Laurent. It was the beginning of many titles.

How many titles have you won?

Cédric Sport has won 62 national and international titles. I’m really proud of that. In 2017 I decided to stop the Vortex racing service in order to take care of engine tuning instead and prepare exclusively for the TM Brand in the KZ class. Today, I prepare KZ, National, OK and OK Junior engines for Sodikart.

You’ve been described as one of the world’s best karting engine makers. And a recent world championship win confirms that. Can you tell us the story of how you got here?

I am extremely passionate about two-stroke engines, their carburation process and how to get so much power from a 125cc mono cylinder engine! I worked with three test benches. I used to spend hours behind those benches. That's my secret! I have customers all over Europe, Estonia and Ukraine.

How has this year been for you, given the pandemic?

This year has been particularly difficult, especially in March when we didn't know if we will have any races or not. Our salvation came from Italy with the WSK organization. With the Covid-19 financial support of the French state I have been able to keep one of my workers. But participating in the different European championships is still really difficult with the sanitary protocols.

What’s the recipe for a perfect kart engine? What’s the secret of your success?

It's a set of different elements; the kart frame, the tyres, the engine and the driver! You can prepare the best engine in the world, but if you don’t have a pilot that’s able to explain what kind of engine power curve he likes, you won't succeed. The last world championship in Lonato was a real success due to the alchemy between Jeremy Eglesias and me. I understood exactly what he expected. He is a great guy and champion. I think that I’ve been very lucky having worked closely with two fantastic drivers, Thomas Laurent and Jeremy Eglesias. They are part of my success story without doubt.

How important are lubricants in reliable, high performance engines?

Motul lubricants are a key factor in engine performance and, as I have worked with Motul for a long time ago, I know exactly how to set up and carburate my engines.

Why do you choose to use Motul?

It's a long story. My father was racing motorcycles in the 80s and started to use Motul lubricants. He became the president of Mercury France and decide to use Motul lubricants for the Mercury outboard racing engine. So, I have always been raised on the Motul oil!
