17.05.2018

For the first time the Motul Superfan concept, a familiar feature in MotoGP, was used at the 24 Heures Motos. Robin Giella, a passionate enthusiast and occasional racer, revelled in it!

All the fans of motorbike racing dream of becoming the Motul Superfan because it’s an exceptional, unique experience. You meet the high-profile movers and shakers, have your fill of thrilling emotions on the track and discover places where access is normally forbidden. Passion is everywhere and almost everything is allowed! If the Motul Superfan was first introduced at MotoGP meetings, the idea of applying it to the 24 Heures Motos gradually caught on the delight of Robin Giella who tells us about this weekend totally unlike any other.

Robin and the motorbike

“When I was eighteen I passed my motorbike licence, but at that age it was difficult to find insurance for a powerful machine so I bought a Yamaha R6 to ride on circuits. In fact, I did a couple of races in Promosport. Racing gives you a really great kick when you find yourself with thirty other bikes on the grid. Your heartbeat goes through the roof! I stopped because I didn’t have enough money, but I hung on to the R6. I finished my studies with a training course at BMW Motorrad and I found a job which enabled me to buy a road-going BMW S1000R at the start of 2018.”

Motul Superfan – how it works

“You begin by registering on the Motul Facebook page and then you go on to the Motul site. I received an email asking me to make a one-minute video in which I had to explain why I was the only one who deserved to be the Motul Superfan for the 24 Heures Motos. And I won! My programme began on Friday 20th April when I met the Motul team, the guys from Eurosport, promoter of the event, and the people from the Automobile Club de l’Ouest.”

Motul Superfan – how it works

A hectic programme!

“On Friday morning, dressed in my Motul Superfan gear (sunglasses, cap, T-shirt) I began with a visit to the works teams, Motul’s technical partners, Honda Racing and the Suzuki Endurance Racing team. Then I did a couple of laps behind Damien Saulnier, the Junior Team Le Mans Sud Suzuki team manager, on a specially-adapted GSX-R 1000. It had a second pair of handlebars on the fuel tank and it was absolutely sensational, above all when you’ve raced as you realise just how good the guy who’s riding it really is.”

“I also did a lap in the bus with Saulnier who pointed out the specific features of the track. On Friday evening, the ACO hosted the legends of the 24 Heures Motos including five-time winners Alex Viera and Gregory Leblanc as well as the record-holder of the number of participations, Gérard Jolivet. I talked to them and it was really exciting.

“On Saturday at 08:30 it was breakfast time in the Motul lounge before going to the Louit 33 and Honda Racing pits during the warm-up. Then I visited the race control centre, the commentator’s box and the press room. The buzz at the start is something really fabulous when you live it facing the packed grandstands in a fully-charged electric ambiance. On Sunday morning, I also went to the museum and sampled the motorbike simulator before following the finish in the parc fermé and the podium ceremony in the Trophy room. It was magic, all the more so as the race was a real thriller!

“My Motul Superfan experience at Le Mans reignited my desire to get back on the circuits. I’ve just sold the R6 and bought a Honda CBR 1000, the same bike as the winners of the 24 Heures Motos. Bravo Motul!”
