HOREX and Motul join forces: from development to the final oil fill!

22.11.2019

HOREX, the German premium motorcycle manufacturer relies on Motul lubrication for their powerful V6 engines. The resurrection of the iconic brand in 2015 has led to a full model range today of three different models. We met the project manager, Frieder Knödler of HOREX, at the EICMA fair in Milan. He talks us through the interesting story of one of Germany's oldest motorcycle brands.

HOREX and Motul join forces: from development to the final oil fill!

Frieder, can you guide us through the heritage of the HOREX brand?

My pleasure, it's quite an interesting story that goes way back in time. In 1923 the traditional German brand HOREX was founded. Today it is the only one of the two real German brands that are still active on the market. We're approaching nearly hundred years of Motorcycle history with our company. In 2015 we brought back the spirit in the brand.

During the roaring fifties, everyone in the motorcycle market knew the Regina motorcycle HOREX produced. It was one of the best selling and famous bikes in those days. Our objective is to bring back the values HOREX used to have during these glory days.

What values are important in order to succeed in, let's face it, a quite competitive manufacturer market?

We strongly focus on innovation and individualisation; we deliver premium quality combined with high-end components and exclusive details and an engine that can't be found elsewhere. That what differs HOREX from the rest of the motorcycle market.

Who are the strong men behind the HOREX Motorcycles and what makes the bike this premium?

We are a private owned company with a specialisation in high-tech engineering. In terms of strong points; we run a VR6 engine which delivers 163 horsepower. The combination of the V-shape and the R (Rows) makes it more compact due to a smaller cylinder-angle than a standard V6 engine. It's the only sporty 6-cylinder engine on the motorcycle market. Combined with innovative carbon fibre technology, we launched the first go to market CFRP steering head frame. The total bike weighs only 219 kilos, which, for a VR6 engine is pretty sharp. We focus on riders who still have passion, emotion and adore the premium finishing. Besides, each bike has many possible styling and personalisation details to choose from. It's all about emotion, passion and exclusivity. In terms of finishing, we only work with the best suppliers: Brembo brakes, Öhlins suspension and Motul for lubricants – just to name some …

How is the manufacturing process?

We also apply the 'one man, one engine' principle. Each engine is built by a single responsible specialist. He leaves his personal signature on every engine he assembles. The mechanic stands for the quality of his work; there simply is no automatic assembly in our production plant. It is a unique combination of handmade craftsmanship with high-tech innovation. We love to combine these two worlds.

We heard the collaboration with the Motul Factory goes beyond supplying oil for OEM use?

Yes, indeed. Motul was our partner in the development of the engine, from the first step until the final launch. Together we developed the specific oil for the VR-engine. In terms of power, reliability and lubrication, the oil really meets our requirements for this quite particular engine.

You have three Models on the Market today?

Exactly, we have the VR6 Classic, the VR6 Café Racer - and the VR6 Raw. The Café Racer is here at the Motul Booth and together with Motul we celebrate the official press release here of the 2020 model in Milan.

What new models can we expect and in which regions?

Be surprised I would say! (laughs) In terms of markets: we already launched in the German speaking countries and now the rest of Europe will follow quickly. Starting from 2020 we will be present in Italy and France, both also strong Motul regions.
