Chris Goodwin: Driving just for fun!

13.09.2018

As a development driver and McLaren GT endurance racer, driving a car is serious business for Chris Goodwin. Out here on the Goodwood Revival, the man who’s raced them all takes a step back and drives just for fun.

Chris Goodwin is becoming a regular on the drum. After sitting down with him in Spa-Francorchamps to talk about the minute development for both road and racing cars (full interview here), we caught up with the Englishman once more at Goodwood. For Goodwin the Revival is completely different from any other race weekend, not just because the cars are a lot older than the McLaren 650SGT3 he usually drives but because this is the biggest weekend where he gets to drive his own cars, not ones owned by racing teams who pay him to drive. He bought these cars with his own money and for his own reasons. At the Goodwood Motor Circuit, he was out in the – now infamous – McLaren M1B and a Lotus 22, a tiny open wheel race car. The McLaren was the brand’s first Can-Am car and a valuable piece in the brand’s history; the Lotus is relatively new as he has just taken delivery of it a year ago.

Leona Burnell, looking smashing in her ’period‘ fifties dress, got the chance to discover the revival from the other side of the fence after winning the Track Experience Competition. Chris Goodwin took her around the circuit in his McLaren during a parade lap. Not the fastest experience she’s had but completely different than from the other side of the fence, she concluded.
