Motul and WEC - Super Season, Super Grid, Super Endurance !

On the first weekend of May (3-5 May) the world’s leading sports prototype and GT drivers will line up for the opening round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) Super Season, the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. As Official Lubricant Partner, Motul will once again play a major part through the entire championship.

The figures for the 2018-2019 transitional “Super Season” are:  14 months in duration, 8 rounds, 6 different countries, 3 continents, and 2 editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans!  Motul’s long and celebrated history with the legendary French race of course needs little introduction.

The biggest ever full-season grid of 37 cars will head to the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, and prestigious automotive manufacturers are joined by the best independent teams from across the globe.  The teams represent 25 different nations – a true World Championship.

Strength in depth and true championship challengers

Competing in the resurgent LMP1 category will be Motul-supported Rebellion Racing. The Swiss team’s all-star driver line up returns to the premier category after winning LMP2 last year with Motul support! Featured heavily on the team’s Rebellion R13-Gibson cars is the name of TVR, and the link between the niche British manufacturer, the team and their engine supplier, Gibson, was brought about by their partner in common…Motul!

Also receiving technical support will be US team DragonSpeed, new to the WEC and which has entries in LMP1 and LMP2, and TDS Racing in LMP2. All nine cars in this super-competitive category are powered by Gibson engines, lubricated by Motul’s celebrated 300V.

At the WEC’s recent pre-season test session, the Prologue, the performances of Rebellion, DragonSpeed and TDS were promising.  Equally encouraging were those of the final team working with Motul in the WEC, the Singapore-based Clearwater Racing which is running a Ferrari in the LMGTE Am category and aiming for nothing less than championship victory.

Endurance challenges are there to be overcome!

The best conditions under which to test any product are those which push it to the extreme. Endurance racing never fails to do that with, for instance an oil that can reach 105°C or a piston having to go up and down more than 2 million times during a 6-hour race.  To race successfully for up to 24 hours non-stop in heat, cold, rain, dust or any other atmospheric condition, requires reliable, high quality products which meet the highest standards.

Gibson’s LMP1 engines will benefit from the use of a newly developed prototype oil – their engineers working alongside Motul on development, endurance and performance.  The competitive knowledge gained from this project is passed on to benefit other motorsport products including the acclaimed 300V Motorsport Line dedicated to racing which is used in the LMP2 and GT cars.  All lessons learned from the giant proving ground offered by competitive motorsport are transferred to Motul’s product line for everyday use.  What wins today is on the shelves tomorrow for the benefit of the consumer.
