Belgian team DG Sport Competition’s Peugeot 308 TCR didn’t take long to start winning in the hotly-contested FIA WTCR Championship.

DG Sport Compétition invested a huge amount of effort in preparing its 2018 programme in the top level events for touring cars. The team’s Peugeot 308 TCR driven by Aurélien Comte scored its maiden victory in the fourth round of the WTCR on the Zandvoort circuit the day after its first top-three finish.

The FIA WTCR is the successor to the World Touring Car Championship. The world series has adopted the TCR regulations and this opens up a wide choice of models that the teams can race provided their price is capped at 110.000 euros, engine included, some four times less than the cars of the previous generation – without engine!

DG Sport began collaborating with Peugeot Sport in 2017 on a programme in the TCR Benelux with the 308 Racing Cup to prepare for the future. At the end of the season, the team managed by Christian Jupsin won the TCR Europe Trophy champion title with its driver, Aurélien Comte, in a one-off event.

The 308 TCR that appeared at the beginning of 2018 was the result of a long period of hard work in which Comte was fully involved. The Peugeot Sport development driver was selected to race in the first FIA WTCR. The start of the season was a bit hectic, but the efforts of the whole DG Sport Compétition team were rewarded at Zandvoort. Comte was in seventh place on the grid for race 1 and he used the 350 bhp of his car to perfection to emerge in second place after the start, which he held till the chequered flag. The reversed grid for race 2 gave him a position on the outside of the front row and he took full advantage of this powering into a lead that he was never to lose. The French driver rounded off the Pentecost weekend clinching the points that went with seventh place in race 3.

The races took place in front of a big crowd as the Red Bull F1 drivers, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, and the runner-up in the 2001 world championship, David Coulthard, put on F1 demonstrations as part of the event.

“We knew that the Zandvoort circuit would suit us better than the previous ones,” said Aurélien. “But quite honestly we weren’t really expecting to win. We’ve had a few problems getting to grips with the Yokohama tyres, which are being used this year as our car has been developed around the Michelins used in the TCR since the start. Our lack of familiarity with the tyre has posed us problems, in particular at the starts of the opening races, but we’ve done a lot of work on this aspect and I think we’ve now found out how to use them.”
