JRT racing will be defending Motul's colors at the Goodwood Revival

05.09.2019

In the autumn of 1998 motor racing returned to Goodwood for the first time since the closure of the famous Motor Circuit in 1966. Known as the Goodwood Revival, the UK-based event has since become one of the biggest historic motorsport events in the world and the only one to be staged entirely in period correct dress. Mike Jordan is running the historic racing shop JRT racing together with his son Andrew. Mike and his codrivers Nicolas Manassian and Mike Whitaker will be defending the Motul colors at the Goodwood Revival races. We had a talk with Mike Jordan in Birmingham.

Mike, why did Motul ask JRT Racing to defend their colors?

After the sale of our racing team, we reoriented into the ultimate classic racing car restoration business. We have been partnering with Motul for a few years now, first in the BTCC championship where Andrew is participating and afterwards in our classic division as well. In our workshop and for our classic cars we rely heavily on Motul for all our restoration projects. We have a good connection with the Motul-team, so it seemed like a logical choice.

What series will you be racing at Goodwood?

The St. Mary’s Trophy is a two-part race, one on Saturday (Star race) and the next one on Sunday (owners’ race), Nicolas Manassian does one race with the Austin A40 on Saturday, and I will perform the other race on Sunday. They add the race times together to get an aggregate and that’s how the classification works out. Secondly, I will be racing the main race on Sunday in a TVR Griffith together with its owner Mike Whitaker.

How big are the chances to win against all the fast, heavy cars? It seems a bit like a David versus Goliath battle?

Well it’s called Sensational Saturday and Super Sunday for a reason! (laughs). The Austin is supported by many fans, so that might help in his series. We’re aiming for a Fifth place which is possible if we can finish just behind the Jaguars. Nicolas also had a full day of testing the Austin, which gives him an advantage to other racers who are often dropped in a car without testing it before the actual race.

Secondly if on Sunday, we can beat the Ferrari 250’s and the AC Cobra’s, who are the favorites, that would be sensational. We are determined to race for podium, and with the TVR Griffith powered by A Ford 289 engine with 450 horsepower, and the lightweight of 900 kilos, who knows what the outcome will be?

Are the cars being specifically race-prepped?

The Austin A40 is at a stage where it is tuned close to perfection for racing the circuits. We just checked it thoroughly, ran a new set of tires, changed all oils and other fluids and added new brake pads. Never change a winning team the saying goes! In case of the TVR, that’s a totally different story. It belongs to my client Mike Whitaker, and we are still finetuning it. Tomorrow I’ll be racing it at Donington circuit in order to have it prepared and tuned at its best.

What time will you be racing the weekend?

On Sensational Saturday the St Mary's Trophy race is presented by Motul at 14h. The second part and final race is on Super Sunday at 15.55h. We will be racing the TVR in the main race on Sunday. With another eight races on the bill, Sunday probably is the most desirable for motorsport enthusiasts. The overall winners are crowned in the second parts of the St Mary's Trophy saloon car race and the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy for motorcycles. We hope to be on the podium too!
