YASID OOZEEAR: THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH DREAMING BIG…

28.06.2018

As children, many of us get a kick out of drawing cars. Most kids eventually grow out of it. But not Yasid Oozeear: he’s still at his desk drawing cars, albeit for his own automotive design studio, Yasid Design.

How did you find your way into automotive design?

When I was a kid, I was always drawing cars. I was very inspired by the classic Formula One cars of that era. When I got older and other children had long stopped drawing cars, I was still at it. By the time I was ten years old, I started becoming more serious and spent my time designing cars that only existed in my head. I moved to London, and from there things just took off.

You run a design studio in the UK. Do you only design cars?

Actually, we don’t design cars at all. By that I mean that we don’t work for car manufacturers in general. At Yasid Design, we mostly focus on designing aftermarket parts for various brands and creating cars for video games. In the very near future, our designs will be featured in a number of major video game titles.

What is the biggest difference between designing cars for games and designing aftermarket parts for real-world use? Do you have a preference?

The two are so different that it’s impossible to pick a favourite. When designing cars or aftermarket parts for the real world, there are so many rules and limitations to follow. But the end result is a real product. When designing a car for a video game, you hardly have any rules at all.

From a designer’s perspective, is there one car in particular you wished you’d designed yourself?

That’s easy. For me, it would be either the Ferrari F40 or the F50. I love the way they look – from a design perspective they’re simply amazing. while I’m very inspired by Pinifarina’s work, they’re not my absolute favourite cars. My overall favourite would be the Ferrari 355 Berlinetta. It’s just perfect in so many ways.

Your career is moving so fast at the moment. Do you have time to think about the future? Where is Yasid Design going?

At the moment, I still feel like I’m on the bottom rung of the ladder. Designing aftermarket parts is just the beginning. My goal is quite simple: I want to make my own car. Not a series production model, but a serious boutique car that’s all my own creation. Maybe before that, I can build some cars on existing chassis, like a coachbuilder. There’s nothing wrong with dreaming big!
