Is this the world’s greatest car & motorcycle collection?

30.04.2020

Iconic eighties and nineties supercars rub shoulders with modern hypercars. Vintage Harleys with race-bred Ducatis. Welcome to Classic Remise, quite possibly the greatest collection of cars and motorcycles under one roof. Well, two actually, because Classic Remise is based in Düsseldorf and Berlin, Germany. We caught up with Mika Hahn, manager of the Düsseldorf branch.

Is this the world’s greatest car & motorcycle collection?

Mika, it’s not quite a museum or a classic car dealership. How do you describe Classic Remise?

It looks like a museum, but in fact we are a commercial centre for special cars. In a museum the cars are the same every day. But here we have a steady change of vehicles. You can feel the cars in our houses with all your senses: see, hear and sometimes smell them. By the way, we also have many motorcycles. Around three hundred: Ducatis, Harleys and Vespas. Brands with a long history.

It’s been called the world’s greatest car collection. What cars do you have in stock?

We have generally around 300 cars at Classic Remise: 100 cars are for sale, 100 cars are in storage and 100 are in our working garages for service. Most of the cars are classics, but we also have some new super/hypercars, such as Bugatti Veyrons, Koenigseggs and Ferraris. We always say that the value of a car is not what’s important. What is, is the emotional value of a car.

What’s the story behind Classic Remise?

Since its opening in 2006, the Classic Remise Düsseldorf has become one of the most attractive event locations in the city. The combination of the historical locomotive roundhouse and the extensive display of classic cars provides a one-of-a-kind venue for banquettes, trade shows, exhibitions and workshops. There’s another Classic Remise in Berlin.

How has coronavirus affected business?

Coronavirus affects the whole world, and also the world of classic cars. Many events and fairs were cancelled (for example, Techno Classica). Our service garages were open the whole time, but the restaurant is closed. A week ago we opened our facility again to the public.

You have two locations in Germany. Are there plans to expand beyond?

We were the first concept of this kind for petrolheads worldwide when we opened in 2003, first in Berlin and then Düsseldorf in 2006. The market has developed and changed a lot since then. But we are very happy with our two houses at the moment. From time to time people offer interesting buildings to us.

What’s it like working with amazing and special cars like these every day?

I think Classic Remise is a magical place for petrolheads. It’s wonderful to be in contact with so many nice vehicles. Every day is different. But it’s not only the cars, it’s the friends from all over the world who visit us.

Is there any connection between your business and Motul?

Nearly all the companies at Classic Remise Düsseldorf use Motul. One of our friends is five-times Sidecar World Champion Pekka Päivärinta from Finland. He got World Champion with Motul and is quite often at Classic Remise.
