How to change your oil on a Subaru WRX

A Step by Step tutorial on how to properly do an oil change on your vehicle. For this oil change, we used a 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STi and Motul 8100 X-clean 5W40 engine oil.

Step: 1 You Need to make sure you have all the proper tools necessary before you start. This will include a jack and jack stands or a vehicle hoist, you will also need an oil drain pan, an oil funnel and a wrench or socket set to remove your drain plug and some paper towel.

Step 2: Make sure you have enough oil on hand to replace what's required according to your vehicle service manual, you will also need a new oil filter, and a new oem crush washer for your drain plug.

 Step 3: Pop the hood on your car and remove the oil filler cap.

Step 4: With your car on level ground, apply your parking brake and jack up the car and place jack stands underneath in the appropriate spots. If using a hoist, place the hoist arms underneath the car and lift the car up.

Step 5: Some vehicles have a plastic or metal undertray which blocks access to the drain plug and oil filter, if your car has this installed, you will need to remove this first.

Step 6: Position your oil drain pan or oil pig in place and remove the oil drain plug using a wrench or socket.

Step 7: Drain the oil out of the oil pan until it has completely stopped dripping.

Step 8: Position your oil drain pan underneath the oil filter and proceed to remove the oil filter from the engine. Start by loosening it off enough to let the present oil leak out before completely removing the filter.

Step 9: Using a rag or paper towel, wipe anywhere oil may have spilled around your engine and or on your exhaust manifold.

Step 10: With the drain plug and oil filter removed, we can now start preparing to install the new filter and drain plug with new crush washer.

Step 11: Clean your drain plug thoroughly and install the new crush washer. Once you have done that, you can now install it back into the oil pan. Be careful not to cross thread the drain plug and it only needs to be tightened snug.

Step 12: Add a good amount of oil to your new oil filter, at the same time using your finger, run some oil around the oil filter gasket to provide a good seal. Now you can reinstall your oil filter, again being careful not to cross thread it on and it only needs to be tightened snug.

Step 13: If your car had a undertray, you can now reinstall it. Now you can jack the vehicle back up, remove the jack stands and lower the car back to the ground. If your using a hoist, you can now lower the car back down.

Step 14: Insert your oil funnel into the oil filler tube, add the recommended oil viscosity and quantity to the engine as per your vehicle owner's manual. Re install the oil filler cap.

Step 15: Remove and clean the oil dipstick. Start the engine and let run for 15-30 seconds to cycle engine oil. Shut the engine off and immediately insert oil dipstick to check the oil level. If you are below the full line, you need to add more oil and repeat this step. Once the oil level is at the full mark, your finished.

Step 16: Wipe any spilled oil that may have occurred during filling and be sure to dispose of your old oil and filter at a proper oil recycling facility.
